Looking for a job that pays $20/hour or more? Would you like a job that works around your personal schedule? Become a NY Travel Baseball Umpire. There’s plenty of work for everybody. But first you must attend our Umpire School. THE SCHOOL IS FREE!!!!!
This year the school will be virtual. Starting the second week in January you will receive a printed lecture, one per week, followed by a quiz (you get to grade yourself).
Then on Sunday mornings we will hold zoom meetings with 4 or 5 students at a time. These meetings will be no longer than ½ hour and they will run between 10am and 12 noon on the following Sundays:
During these zoom meetings you will get to ask questions about the lectures and we can all get a little better acquainted.
In March you will need to attend a couple of outdoor training sessions so we can refine your mechanics.
The umpiring assignments will be for the Prospect Park Baseball Association based out of Prospect Park in Park Slope, Brooklyn. When you’ve gained some experience, we also have work for our NY Travel Baseball League where the teams are more competitive. The travel games could be anywhere in Brooklyn or Queens or Manhattan.
During a pandemic, umpires call games from behind the pitcher in an attempt at maintaining appropriate social distancing protocols. During a pandemic, an umpire has no need for equipment (e.,g, chest protector, shin guards, mask).
However, when it is safe to do so, our umpires call balls and strikes from behind the catcher. Therefore, at some point, you will need to purchase a set of equipment.
Our supplier at the sportsloft.com offers our students a starter package at a discount should you choose to go that route.
Either way, you will need to purchase an umpire shirt and a hat from us (around $60) and you will need to purchase a pair of heather grey umpire pants.
